With more than 25 years of experience, Canto has become a trusted and competent partner supplying customers throughout the world with Cumulus as a leading digital asset management system on the market.

Which file types can be managed with Cumulus?

Cumulus supports all digital file formats because it captures core metadata provided by the operating system, such as file name, format, size, modification date, etc. For the world’s most popular file formats, Cumulus provides additional functionality or enhanced metadata support. This enables users to find files based on audio/video durations, fonts used in layouts, full text of presentations and documents.

How does Cumulus handle video files ?

Cumulus extracts metadata and supports over 60 audio and video file formats for quick search, retrieval and download.

With the Cumulus Video Cloud add-on you can convert video content into different formats (fvl, wmv, mp3, mp4, 3gp). Once converted, you can customize player to embed on web pages and generate download links to easily share your videos. Cumulus uses HTTP live streaming (HLS) to recognize the device and platform use for an optimal viewing experience.. Your company keeps full rights to the content you upload and no ads are ever displayed when you use the Cumulus Video Cloud.

Currently our assets are stored across various servers and we are utilizing a very unstructured approach of organizing digital content. How can Cumulus organize our assets?

Canto’s team of digital asset management experts can work with your team to build a metadata model and software configuration that will work best for you.

Depending on what makes the most sense, we may work with you to centralize all of your digital assets into a central location. However, Cumulus can point to multiple storage locations that you designate, if needed.  Our team of experts will help you decide, and can even help you save time cataloging files into Cumulus by referencing preexisting naming conventions and folder structures.

Cumulus supports all digital file formats and captures core metadata provided by the operating system, such as file name, format, size, modification date, geo-location data, etc.

We are a globally operating company. How can Cumulus (and DAM in general) help us work more efficiently with our global offices and branches?

With Cumulus you can access your catalogs of rich media from anywhere in the world using a simple web browser or mobile app.

Remote offices work from the same set of files. Check-in and check-out keeps correct versions in use. And self-service portals are a tremendous time-saver not only for field agents and partners who get that product brochure when and where they need it, but self-services is also a huge time-saver for Creatives who no longer have to hunt for files – keeping them on-task and interruption free.

How does Cumulus handle InDesign files?

Cumulus offers an integration that enables you to manage all your Adobe InDesign files

Digital assets managed by Cumulus can be accessed from InDesign so Creatives can stay in their familiar application, spend more time producing digital content, and less time searching, downloading, uploading, linking and relinking files.

Is Cumulus available On Premise or as Cloud Solution?

You have two deployment options when choosing Cumulus as your DAM System.

On Premise:
Cumulus On Premise deployment takes place on your own company servers with the help of Canto Professional Services and your IT team.

Hybrid Cloud:
Various Hybrid Cloud configurations are possible with Cumulus. Take advantage of both private and public cloud resources to configure Cumulus in the way that works for your business.  Whether deploying Cumulus in cloud-based data center by your IT team, or taking advantage of the Amazon S3 Asset Store for Cumulus for fast efficient global delivery of assets – Canto has you covered.

How does Cumulus handle data security?

When deployed in a LAN environment, Cumulus provides all the expected protections. For users who connect over the internet, LDAP and RSA encryption can be used for logins and SSL (https) connections are also supported. User requests are processed through secure Java Web applications, and sessions work via firewalls. At no time are your original assets ever directly accessible over the Internet.

How can I control usage and distribution of my assets in Cumulus?

In Cumulus you can manage distribution of your valuable digital content to control versions and adhere to branding guidelines.

Cumulus lets you define roles and permissions to ensure appropriate privacy – thus denying and granting access to files based on rules you set. Check-in and checkout files. Add comments to document changes. Edit, process and add overlays and watermarks to images on-demand.

How does Cumulus work with other systems?

Your assets and corresponding data managed in Cumulus become even more valuable when users can access those files directly from their Project Management tool, their Marketing Automation platform, Web CMS, eCommerce System, Product Information Management system, Adobe tools or other digital workflow systems.

Canto offers standard integrations for a large number of common systems such as WordPress, Typo 3 or Drupal.

If there is no standard integration available for the system you use, don’t worry: Cumulus includes hooks that make it easy to integrate to external systems. Metadata import / export options, on-the-fly mirroring to external databases and a published API give you power and flexibility. The Canto Integration Platform offers SOAP Web Services and a RESTful API for virtually any custom development. Cumulus Java SDK also provides additional integration options.

Can I use Cumulus only within my organization – or can I easily add freelancers to my Cumulus workflows?

In Cumulus you can collaborate with freelancers and externals by sending them personalized collection links containing the content they need without having to create a user account. Create an “upload collection” for your freelancers, photographers and agencies to directly upload their work to Cumulus – drag and drop to their browser, and see it instantly in Cumulus on the backend – password protection optional. To streamline collaboration internally, Cumulus users can comment on files and reply to other user’s comments – or notify users via email about the changes made.

How does Cumulus handle metadata ingestion and editing?

Cumulus captures a mountain of metadata when a file is cataloged – it knows the fonts used in layouts, Adobe Photoshop layer details, the frames of videos, and a virtually unlimited amount of other format-specific information.

Categorizing your metadata fields will help you determine whether you have everything you need. Most metadata can be classified as content description, status of asset, restrictions for access or use and attributes of a file.

What is the difference between a database and a digital asset management system?

A digital asset management solution and a database are both able to store information about the assets and retrieve information. A digital asset management solution however provides you a secure and intelligent way to reference, search, process, transform and share your assets from a branded environment. DAM is a highly configurable solution that can be integrated in your existing systems and softwares.
